The Dos and Don’ts of Residential Pressure Washing Companies

How important it is to have your house pressure washed every now and then. Not only will this get rid of all the built-up dirt and grime, but it will also help to maintain the paint job and keep your home looking new. But before you hire a professional to do the job for you, be sure to read our list of dos and don’ts for residential pressure washing companies!

DO:

  1. Schedule your pressure washing during the wintertime when it’s warmer outside and there is little chance of rain for at least a few hours after you’ve finished. If you’re going to be using any harsh chemicals, such as chlorine bleach or muriatic acid, then make sure it is dry and sunny out because otherwise, these chemicals will discolor any non-porous surfaces they come in contact with.

  2. Use a mixture of hot water and dish soap to help keep grime from re-appearing quickly after cleaning. The soap helps lift oil and grease stains more easily so they don’t stick around too long after being washed off.
  3. Make sure that your garden hose is equipped with a nozzle to regulate water pressure. This will help you clean without accidentally gouging holes in siding or stripping paint off of doors and windowsills.
  4. Always start at the top of your home and move downward so that any possible runoff from one surface won’t damage anything below it, such as roof shingles or patio furniture.
  5. Remove any hanging plants, lawn furniture, toys, etc before cleaning so they don’t get knocked over during the process and break/rip/etc easily when wet.
  6. Shake out your house rugs to remove loose dirt before having them washed because these areas tend to have a lot of built-up grime that needs to be for a thorough cleaning session to take place.
  7. If you need to apply any chemicals, such as a moss-killing solution, to your home before washing it, then you should definitely do that before the cleaning begins. This will not only ensure that these harsh products are not washed into storm drains or other natural water sources, but it will also save you from having to walk around with large chemical containers in hand while trying to climb up and down ladders/windowsills/etc.
  8. Make sure all gutters and drains are clear of any debris so they don’t get clogged during the process and cause further damage or flooding problems later on.
  9. After rinsing off your house with clean water once you’ve finished pressure washing it, use a clean cloth to dry any siding or other surfaces where water has collected. This will help remove streaks and leave your home looking shiny and new again!

DON’T:

  1. Pressure wash during the hottest part of the day, especially if you’re using bleach or muriatic acid as mentioned above because these chemicals can cause severe damage to wood, stucco, lawn furniture, etc when left alone in sunlight—or worse yet, under a tarp—for an extended period of time.

  2. Apply this same logic to freezing temperatures since water left sitting on top of ice for extended periods of time can expand up to 10% which is enough to pop roof shingles right off!
  3. Use a heavy-duty cleaning solution if you’re going to be putting a tarp over your home at any point during the process. The weight of the fabric will put pressure against any walls and windowsills it is covering, which can cause damage or even break windows!
  4. Wash underneath eaves because this area tends to have a lot of loose paint chips and splinters that could easily end up in somebody’s foot if not cleaned properly before beginning the process.
